Happy New Year everyone!! With the new year come new changes…so ManyMentors is happy to announce a partnership with Concursive, a Virginia-based social enterprise software company, and CTiHub, a premiere innovation connection website developed by Connecticut’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR)!! This partnership will add a new element to ManyMentors— the ability for mentor and mentee pairs to collaborate in an online environment to design, re-create, engineer, or solve STEM challenges formulated by ManyMentors and industry partners! The first challenge will focus around computer science engineering, and subsequent challenges will focus on other areas of science, technology, engineering and math. These New Explorations in Talent, or NEXT Challenges will culminate in quarterly events in which teams compete with other teams for prizes….and bragging rights! Mentees can collaborate with mentors, acquire new skills, and learn something new with the upcoming NEXT Challenges!! EXCITING!!!!!!!

Presentations at Hartford High School

Friday was another amazing day! Keshia and I presented to the 9th Grade Academy at Hartford High School. We talked to them about ManyMentors and how beneficial mentors have been in shaping our lives. We met soooo many wonderful students (who want to be mentees!) and teachers that are looking forward to the launch of ManyMentors in January. After presenting, the Principal of Hartford High Schools Engineering & Green Academy invited us to speak to his students— all of them!! We were ask to inspire the students to believe in themselves, stay in school and pursue higher education, and we did just that! Keshia and I are excited about our upcoming presentations at Granville Academy and mentor/tutoring training back to Hartford High this Thursday. MM rocks! :0)

Tiffany and I had the distinct pleasure of attending the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering’s (AIMBE’s) conference on mentoring for minorities and women (official title: Effective Mentoring Strategies to Accelerate Retention and Career Advancement of Underrepresented Minorities in Biological, Biomedical, and Bioengineering…whew…that took about 5 minutes to type!!) Talk about a conference that is up your alley!! We not only heard from the leaders in the field for mentoring, but also met wonderful people (mostly women) that have interest in starting/improving mentoring programs at their respective universities. Needless to say, these individuals will be invaluable to us as we continue to develop and in the future when we expand. Goooo mentoring!!!!!!!!!

What an AWESOME day Friday was!! After our meeting with CBIA staff members on Monday, we were invited to attend the Education Foundation’s board meeting at Hartford High School. Not only were the seniors within the Engineering and Green Technology School present (and asked great questions!), but also higher education and industry professionals! There was UConn, CCSU, and University of Hartford representation, and also Pratt and Whitney, Northeast Utilities, Hamilton Sundstrand and other companies there just to name a few. You better believe I tried my best to talk to EVERYONE about ManyMentors!! There were some great potential partners in the room and I can’t wait to kick off those relationships. Not to mention I darn near convinced a high school student to major in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Virginia…go hoos!! #ulterior motives ;)

The Institute on Teaching and Mentoring:: COMPACT 2011!!
What an inspiring, uplifting, and informative conference!! In other words— AWESOME!! This annual conference brings together hundreds of future and current minority  PhD’s in one place! Although we are mostly from the STEM fields, there are also other areas represented such as educational leadership, history, etc. I met quite a few people who express lots of interest in ManyMentors (whoop whoop!), attended a couple of session on mentoring, and also met some important women who are experts in mentoring (whoop whoop whoop!!). I can’t wait for the conference next year in Tampa, FL!!
